Round 2, in January, is the biggest round and the most forgiving. Most of the class gets admitted here. If you need the autumn to retake a test or sharpen your story, Round 2 is your target. Most successful applicants land here. Zero shame in it.
Round 3? Be honest with yourself. By Round 3 most seats are spoken for and scholarship money is thin. It works for exceptional profiles or people with a specific reason. For everyone else, waiting a year beats burning an application on Round 3. I know that is not what you want to hear in March.
International applicants get one more wrinkle: visa timing. Round 1 and 2 admits get months for visa processing. Round 3 admits get stress. Factor that in before you romanticize a late application.
Reapplicants, listen up. Many schools look kindly on Round 1 reapplicants who show real improvement, and some fast-track them. If last year did not work out, a stronger Round 1 beats a rushed Round 3 every time.
